Hi ShowMe!

Thanks for your comments and observations! For some reason, I was going thru old messages and just now came across this one of yours! LOL

Anyway, you make some good points, but, Texas folks, even cowboys, have very little in common with the Great Plains or true West. We were settled by a whole different type culture.

But one of the main points I was making in my original article (which I am going to follow up on soon), is that the term "The South" in not one which originated with, nor belongs, historically speaking, to the states of the true Deep South. And being from a Deep South state does not make one an authority on how the South is defined anymore than being a native Texan makes one the final word on what is Texas.

There are "many Souths" and, historically speaking, Texas has as much claim to it as any other state of the Old Confederacy. In fact, more than several of them. It was one of the orginal Confederate states and the second to last to be re-admitted to the Union because the legislature flatly refused to shame the memory of the Confederacy by agreeing that secession was null and void ad initio.

Now, if THAT aint Southern with a special flair? LOL

Anyway, to wind it up, I appreciate what you say. I only ask that folks from the deep South (where my kin came from) recognize that the South is NOT limited to the southeastern states. It never has been a single monolithic place, but rather, a unique region bonded by history, culture and blood lines. It ranges from the mountains of Appalachia in Virginia, to the Old South culture of the Deep South, and then the way out to the plains in Texas.

The commonality of it all is that all of us know we are Southern....
