Subject: Virginia : In a State of Flux...?

Hi,
I enjoy reading these posts. Im a native of Virginia, and consider myself Southern- as in sweet tea, fried tomatoes Southern. And thats how I was raised. I get very irked when people dont include Virginia on "Southern" musings because IMO- Virginia is the Birthplace of Southern culture and was Southern long before Alabama was even a state! The settlers at Jamestown in 1607 established their distinction from the New England Yankees up in Plymouth, Mass.

I realize Northern Virginia is not Southern anymore- and Hampton Roads too is very transient. But as a whole, I say we are where the South begins!

Now that being said- the Contemporary South sometimes leaves out us Virginians-which I think is a plumb shame. They call us Mid-Atlantic or WORSE YET **SHUDDERS** Northeast! Yes, those Atlanta people on the Weather Channel. I cant believe it- well yes we are not the Deep South- but we are The South, and Southern, non the less

As a Virginian- I feel I have more in common with someone from Georgia or Tennessee, than someone from New Jersey. Yet if we are called "Mid-Atlantic" that puts us in with those Yankees from New Joisey!??

I wonder why this attitude toward Virginia? But Kentuckians get to choose which side to be on- they werent even in the Confederacy, Y'all! Virginia is The South, and I challenge anyone to call us anything else.
