I am 63 yrs old; I was born and reared in South Jackson (Doodleville). I have often said. "I wouldn't trade my life and the experience I gained by being born in Doodlevile". True much of my early childhood was spent being looked down on by Southern Whites, but that didn't cause me to hate whites. I was reared by my Grandmother, who taught me that all whites didn't have the same mentality. I lived just below Beatty Street grocery, which was owned by Mack Baldwin, although he was from Scott county and prejudice, he always did well toward the blacks in the community. His little store didn't bring in much, but what it did, was because of us. My house was at the beginning of the black neighborhood; Mrs. Downing lived behind us in the white section. Whenever she bought candy or cookies for her grandchildren, she always had them to bring me some at the fence. Doodlevile was known as a rough area, the Police were called in regular. We donated our share of young men and women to the Correctional system, but for such a small place, we turned out Doctors, Teachers, Politicians, and other Professionals. Although some of the residents raised a lot of hell, it was God that held us together. We had 3 night clubs or cafes, but we also had 4 churches. By the way, Beatty Street grocery is the only building left standing on my side of the tracks. Mr. Mack's son-in-law, Malcolm now runs the store, and earns more in a day than his father-in-law made in a month.
