Subject: Bougainville - Fiji men sign deal to train soldiers

Fiji men sign deal to train soldiers
(Wednesday, January 25, 2006)

THE five Fijian men remaining in Bougainville at Papua New Guinea have already started training Me'ekamui Defence Force soldiers and would only leave when they have completed their two-year contracts.

Me'ekamui officials told the Post Courier that the five men had signed a two-year contract to provide defensive and military training and wouldn't be leaving until they had fulfilled terms of their contracts.

The five are allegedly in Tonu, which is South of Bougainville and were hired by Noah Musingku to provide counter revolutionary training to Me'ekamui soldiers.

An official of the Me'ekamui Defence Force told the Post Courier that there was no way the five men would leave Tonu because they had signed contracts preventing them from leaving.

Colonel Damien Koike revealed that 30 soldiers had been undergoing training with the Fijian commandos.

He said more of his boys were keen to train under the guidance of the five and some youths had also arrived to take part in the training.

It was reported that 30 young men from the Konnou area in Buin would be joining other youths at Mr Musingku's base camp.

Last week Inter Government Relations Minister Sir Peter Barker had put pressure on the Autonomous Bougainville Government to take steps to remove the five men.

This had allegedly been met with resistance by Mr Musingku, who said the men weren't leaving because of their two-year contracts.
