Subject: media on whose leash?

Interesting to note that the former Cook Islands Media Council failed because of too many complaints from the government of the time, according to the Pitts.

In fact, the CIMC failed because of internal machinations by the Pitts. Council Secretary was Arthur Taripo, a public servant who now attends conferences on behalf of the Pitts, see the Australian Press Council website below. Industry delegate to the council was Trev Pitt, before the Pitts began their own news services.

Most of the complaints came from their associates, not government. Their intent, later confessed to me by George Pitt, was to flood the council with complaints, thereby discrediting it and its inability to handle the number of complaints.

Why were Arthur and Trev left in such sensitive positions? We trusted them at the time. Arthur was a former editorial adviser to daily Cook Islands News. Trev was a former reporter for the same paper. Their input and advice was welcome and, up until 1998, we thought balanced and fair.

But then they changed, so much so we no longer understand where they are coming from. For those at all interested, Trev did rave to me once about coming back from university and how effective reductionist thinking was as an analytical tool. "But you have to be careful," he warned at the time. "If you break things down far enough, you can make them mean anything."

I suggest that the Pitts have ignored Trev's warning and subjected ethics to just this kind of reducto absurdum. Our entire industry suffers as a result.
