Subject: An apology Re: [pacific_media_watch] 4400 COOK IS: CITV cuts off expose

Kia ora na all,

As predicted, the PMG has responded to issues raised with personal attacks against a reporter rather than answering the main issues involved.

To summarise, these issues are:

1. PMG's lack of accountability, i.e. explain programming cuts.
2. No adherence by PMG to a code of ethics or a professional standards group with a written constitution.
3. In fact, no code of ethics at all.

In the past, when challenged on my hits - and misses - as a reporter, editor, and a publisher, I have tried my best to respond fully. PMG has yet to do this. Instead, they attack critics instead of the criticism.

For The Record. I have in the past praised PMG for their energy in advertising, promotion and public relations for various administrations and political parties. I applaud and am not at all jealous of their commercial success. I am even less jealous of their failure, as a TV monopoly, to deliver ethical media.

For The Record. An apology. I had been assured that it was still ABC 24 hours a day in Aitutaki, the second most developed island in the Cooks, and 110km by plane from my Rarotonga base. I have checked by phone with my Aitutaki source, and it is now clear I did not question his comments from the often timeless outer islands closely enough. My mistake and I apologise for claiming that ATV does not take PMG programmes, although this was the case for some years. Shoddy? Perhaps. A mistake? Certainly.

My point is that PMG has no mechanism by which mistakes may be admitted, criticised or accounted for. I have never seen them publish a For The Record, correcting or clarifying anything. PMG refuses critics Right of Reply. They have admitted their print items suffer "embellishment" and are meant as "entertainment" but only made that clear in one issue.

Enough for now. My final point should be to congratulate CITV for responding to criticism positively - at in as much as the fact that they replayed the documentary after my story to PMW. It's a step in the right direction.

Kia toa,

jason
