Subject: SI Photographer Assaulted

Kili‚s relatives chase
our chief cameraman

ANGRY and primitive-thinking relatives of former
police superintendent, James Kili, yesterday tried
unsuccessfully to stop our photographer from taking
pictures of the jailed officer.
And when they could to stop him, they chased and swore
at photographer Charles Kadamana outside the Central
Magistrates Court in Honiara.
Mr Kadamana was on assignment at the Court premises
when he was verbally assaulted and chased by two women
believed to be close relatives of Kili.
The two women, one an elderly and another who is much
younger, tried to prevent our photographer from taking
pictures of Kili when he was escorted to a waiting
Police vehicle outside the Magistrates Court.
Upon failing to prevent the photographer, the two
angry women tried to seize the camera and chased him
along with a group of men who were eager to know what
was happening.
According to Mr Kadamana, he was tackled and
manhandled by two men during the chase ˆ one of whom
tore his shirt close to the Honiara Public library.
"They grabbed me and tried to seize the camera," said
Kadamana, who was traumatised after the incident.
„But I was lucky to make it to the office with only
minor bruises,‰ he added.
This was the second to be experienced by Mr Kadamana.
The first was when he was on assignment at one of the
night clubs in Honiara and was confronted by a former
senior police officer for taking pictures during the
function.
The senior office, who has since been charged with
more than 10 criminal offences, is currently in police
custody.
Despite the incidents, Mr Kadamana said he will not
give up his profession as a photojournalist because he
would like to inform the public and the nation with
pictures about things that happen.
"I will not give up my work because it is my
responsibility to tell the public about what is
happening around us with my pictures," he said.
The case has been reported to police.
Kili, a ruthless police officer who went around the
city intimidating and threatening innocent civilians
during the lawless period, was yesterday jailed for
five years.
