PRESS RELEASE

“HeadStrong girls to inspire others on International Women’s Day”

What do a persevering small-business owner, a hard-working and dedicated former rugby player and a courageous television news journalist have in common?

They are part of a group of role models who inspired young women to feature their stories in the latest publication by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM).  Entitled “HeadStrong,” the document will be launched on International Women’s Day, Monday March 8th 2004 at Sila Central High School in Nausori.

The young women whose role models are featured in “HeadStrong” are participants in FWRM’s inaugural Emerging Leaders Forum. As part of their year-long leadership training programme, they were tasked with a Strength Development Exercise which resulted in interviews with the models of their strengths, and the essays captured in “HeadStrong.” The original assignment was borrowed from an exercise developed specifically for young people by Dr Karen Reivich , the Co-Director of the Pennsylvania Resiliency Project at the University of Pennsylvania.

Coordinator, Virisila Buadromo says “Using the exercise, the emerging leaders learned what their signature strengths are as well as connected with the people who they deemed models of these traits. They identified with how their role models “did it” “and how the choices they have made in their lives have led them to where they are today.”

FWRM hopes that “HeadStrong” will inspire other young people to find their own strengths and draw on it to make healthy choices for themselves,” said Ms Buadromo.
