They were buff, yes. There is currently a debate as to which colour they would have been had she been completed as a civilian ship - white or buff.

Sorry, I can't help you with the actual construction. It's been suggested that you could use model railway bridge girders, or you could get them photo etched (very expensive).

Auto decals are an option, or you could paint it on by masking the line with tape (clear tape is better than "masking tape"). I checked with Duane Fowler and he said that it would be too hard to make a decal for the line because green is a hard colour to produce without dots being visible.
