Subject: Russell's statement on Gruntland is already being picked up by the media. A lovely example of info spinning >>>

by Sydney Morning Herald, which is by no means a tabloid (neither by the format nor by the content):

Softy Russ quits high life for loved ones

November 19 2002

Russell Crowe is just a big softy at heart. The Gladiator star announced yesterday he is quitting show business and returning to Australia to be with his ill father and his long-suffering girlfriend, Danielle Spencer.

Crowe admitted he was suffering "massive stress" and needed to take a break for a year.

A showbiz source, Peter Ford, said the actor made his decision after a long, emotional phone call with Ms Spencer, who was reportedly furious with him over his punch-up in a London restaurant last week.

The 38-year-old was found on the toilet floor on after he clashed with a New Zealand rugby league player, the Warriors' Eric Watson.

In a statement released yesterday, signed "Love, Russell", Crowe said his success had brought with it a "massive level of stress, not only to me but to my ... family and friends".

"Let me clarify something else," he wrote. "I am in love with Danielle Spencer but I don't get to spend nearly enough time with her. Dani has been very patient with all the speculations of the past year or so which I thank her for. I feel a great need to wake up with her as many days of my life as I can."

Crowe said his father was due to begin a series of operations next month to relieve "excruciating pain" from carpal tunnel syndrome in his wrists.

"I need to be available to him and my family during this time ... this is not the time to add pressure to him," he said.

Mr Ford said people should not be surprised at the confessional tone of Crowe's statement. "For all his faults, he's actually a very honest bloke - to the extent that it's almost a fault in itself."

He believed the Oscar-winning actor was on a last warning from Ms Spencer.

"My info is that she's told him she doesn't want to be part of all that drinking, brawling and bad behaviour any more," he said.

For the life of me, I've read Russell's statement on Gruntland a couple of times, and I can't find the part about him calling it quits in showbusiness. Even tried reading it backwards, the good fan that I am, lol. I giggled at the "long-suffering girlfriend" thingie in the SMH article though :-))
