Subject: Afghanistan/John Booth

If anyone is interested in helping Orphans in Kabul Afghanistan, please contact me.
I keep in touch with our classmate John Booth, who is stationed over there in the Army 45th, and when I asked him if he wanted me to send him and his men anything (care package or whatever)like I use to do when he was with the Marines, he told me that he would really appreciate it if I wanted to help, that I help the orphans in the local orphanage over there. They have nothing but the clothing on their backs. He sent me some devastating photos of how they are living, and I was really moved to start helping, as well as raising others awareness to begin helping as well.
So far I have a "slightly used outgrown shoes" drive going at our local elementary school here in Norman, I have a local business, "York", donating the postage for the larger boxes of donations, and just by word of mouth have several hundred dollars already raised in just under 10 days of doing this, to spend on the much needed "solar powered" items, which John says are really important because they only have 4 hours of electricity a day at the moment.
I have a list of needs (pretty much everything is on the list), a file of photographs, and Johns Address in Kabul if anyone is interested in sending a box.
He prefers not to have cash donations sent over, which is why I'm using what has been received so far to purchase the more expensive solar equipment.
They are interviewing me for our local paper this week on the project so I'm really hopeful that others will respond to their need as well!
Please email me at ddeeds1@cox.net if you are interested and I'll fill you in!
Thanks guys!
Tracy

Hey guys, I forgot to add this on. On an earlier post this year John specifically said school supplies, so I wanted you to know that they can use so much more. The following was from John.

All kinds of things would be appreciated. Clothes for 6-14 year olds, paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners, notebooks, reading books, games, shoes, coloring books, crayons, toiletry articles, hygiene stuff, children's medicines (tylenol, aspirin, robitussin, etc.), vitamins (EXTREMELY limited diet here), antibiotic ointment, toys, etc. Also, it would be great if anyone could send solar powered things like radios, lamps and such. They only have about 4 hrs of electricity each day, so they could really utilize solar powered items. Think of it this way...what would you need if you were stuck out in the middle of nowhere without electricity and had nothing but the clothes that you were wearing.
