Super Bowl XXXVII
From San Diego
240 min.
For the second straight year, the Big Game is played just one week after the conference championships. Unfortunately, Super Bowl X MVP Lynn Swann believes everything goes smoother when there's a two-week gap. “The first reason is organization. The players can get their families squared away [and] it takes the off-field pressure off them,” says Swann, who shares on-field duties with Melissa Stark, while Al Michaels and John Madden man the booth. “And second, you want the best players at their best. It gives them more time to recover.”
ABC has a lengthy gap between the start of today's Super Bowl coverage and kickoff, with four hours of features, interviews and profiles to get viewers ready for some football. Pregame festivities culminate in a collaboration by guitarist Carlos Santana and singers Michelle Branch and Beyonce Knowles. Prior to kickoff, Celine Dion sings “God Bless America” and the Dixie Chicks perform the national anthem. It's doubtful the audience will diminish at halftime, with Shania Twain and No Doubt hoping to match the intensity of last year's dramatic performance by U2. “This year's show will be up, powerful, and [it will] focus on women's impact on culture,” says co-producer Jimmy Iovine. “The NFL is giving musicians a platform that really lets them shine.” Iovine's producing partner, Joel Gallen, adds, “It's not the traditional halftime show. We're relying on the performers and their interaction with the audience.” (Live) (VCR Plus+ 300133)
