Subject: For what its worth: Predictions
In reply to: MG77B 's message, "Early season predicitions for 2006" on 16/12/05 10:52:26am

The gap between the top 4 & the rest should close.
Injuries will play a huge part as will team selections & rookies improving.
Most teams have a legitimate chance of a top 8 finish.

Teams to beat:

Power: Simply the best starting 18.Should finish top 4.Slight query on depth ?
Dawks: Best senior depth.Should finish top 4 but are no gimme to win it as their best 22 is beatable.

Smokie:

Swans: Potential big scoring scoring line up whose biggest weakness in the past has been the procession of coaches. Now fixed & should finish top 4.

Big Improvers:

Bombers: Young gun midfield, high scoring small defenders & a powerful forward line.Need luck with injuries as in my mind there are quite a few "sus" players in the 2's.The 8 beckons.

Brians: Smashed by injury this year.Excellent forward line + a new look midfield should see them challenge strongly for the 8.

Sliders:

Cats: Smashed by delistings & retirements its gotta hurt for at least 1 year.

Kangas: The players traded out are the players i would of kept therefore a slide is the prediction.

The Rest:

Magpies,Groins & Bitchmond can all lay claims to filling the top 4 but with bad luck (injuries) could just as easily miss the 8.

Blues,Aints & Kelpies can all make the 8 with luck re injuries but are probably a year away from a top 4 finish.

The Fockers:

Aiming at a 5-8 finish.Anything short of this is a failure.
Squad is a little "green" to finish top 4.

Key Players: The talls Koschitzke,Gardiner,Richards,Rocca & Brennan need to stay fit.

Players ready to explode: Cooney,Wells & Didak

Potential guns: Brennan & Sylvia

Players to watch: T.Williams,T.Boyle,S.Dempster & C.A.Johnson should all be pushing for 1's selection by the end of the year.

Disclaimers:
Bias towards the Fockers may be present ;)

My AFL prediction for 05: The Swans are garbage. Not for the 1st time "100% wrong".

Well done mate-----Good observations.

Power--Will be there come GF time if top 22 stay on paddock. Great squad of players.
Swans--Libba has inherited and has added depth to an already impressive team.
Fockers-- What Rb has done to the Fockers is unbelievable. With luck in avoiding injuries, should climb into top 8 and big possibility of top 4.
Bombers--Will improve on 2005 showing. Has made some very good trades in Off season.
Brians-- Will be a rebuilding year. Has some very good youngsters and will develop into a very formidable team.
Shame he has lost DARCY once again.
Magpies--who knows, big changes to squad. Should still be there finals time.
Groins-- going for broke in 2006. if Groins stay injury free, will have a great year.Final 4 definite possibility. Injuries to key players will not help.
Bitchmond-- Good starting 22 but may drop in 2006, as a little light in depth.
Aints- Has good claims to being a much improved side in 2006. Has added depth to side. Look out for the Aints in 2006.
Kelpies-- Again a good starting 22. Will suffer if injuries take its toll.
Blues,Cats and Kangas may struggle in 2006, but have youngsters that will develop and should climb ladder in 2007.
Dawks-- Good depth, lacks the really good player like a Ball, Hodge,Dal Santo,Cousins etc.
Dermie and Jason will have the pressure on them to pick Best 22 every week. Selection night will be interesting.
Hope to be in Top 4 once again.
I can see the improvers will be Rusling, McLean, Walters and Rowe.
Will miss Hudson, as he gets over his knee reco.
But, biggest smokie may be Chris Knights. Great season with the Eagles in 2005. May find himself in the starting Crows 22 early in 2006. Coach Maxwell sees him as a possible RISING STAR in 2006.

Flag for 2006.
It erks me to say this, but my son Libba really has a great chance to take it out in 2006.
I have helped him, but he has always had the last say in any trade or recruitment.
The little buggar still refuses to trade Nicoski to the DAWKS. Dermie is really pissed off.
He may be a few months shy of his 10th birthday, but he knows his footy.
He is a good footballer too. His brothers are good footballers, but Libba just has that Footy brain.
Would love to see him drafted to Collingwood in 8 years time.

[> [> [> Magpies View...... -- D9, 22/12/05 7:50:51am [1]

It seems like a copout that my views are similar to RB and Maxwells assesments, but these guys know where everyone is at, and if it were a real comp, they would be spot on with individuals match ups and all, they are that astute.

The Magpies are going all out in 06, the clock is at 11 and 1 and we are just eager to add a big cup to our empty cup display cabinet.

Traded heaps in the off season, so it is a new look team, but I believe it has improved considerably.

INS: Hansen, Miller, T.Selwood, Montagna, Cook, Heffernan, Birrs, C.Gardiner, Lee, H.Shaw, Spencer, McEntee, M.West, Hurn, Lucy, Birchall. 16
OUT: Holland, Nicoski, Barry, Lynch, C.Cloke, Fiora, Fosdike, Perkins, Leppitsch, Raso, Begley, B.Johnson 12

Defence: Strengthened up by the inclusion of Miller. We now have Jacobs, Miller, Croad, Bolton and Carroll as tall defenders, Lucy, Birchall, Spencer and Lee as developing tall defenders. Medium defenders include Grover, A.Selwood, Mundy, H.Shaw and Heffernan, and smaller defenders in Cook and he developing Hurn round it out nicely.

Forwards: Once again strengthened by key position eagle Ashley Hansen, as a tall to go with Tarrant, Perrie, T.Cloke, Jones and C.Gardiner, with players M.West, B.Hall, Hartlett, McConnell developing. Around their feet when they spill marks would be Green and Davey with developing player Thomas Murphy rounding it out.

Midfield: The running brigade of K.Johnson, Embley, Tivendale, N.Lappin, Power, Egan, Iacobucci and Thomson welcome the arrivals in Hurn, Birrs, Montagna and T.Selwood.

Rucks: Also fairly strong with Charman and Brogan the main ruckman in the ones, helped out by T.Cloke. Putting pressure on them to perform is Blake, McEntee and B.Hall

Weaknesses may be the shortage of another ruckman, and another small forward. The loss for gain trades of McLaren and C.Cloke may of shortened the ruck division a tad. Fioras non performance seen his departure lose a small forward midfielder, but the gains we think outway that.

Looking forward to it, bring it on.
