"Shortcut To Newark are all about the melody, forget any cliché genre I could pop them into, these four guys know how to write a melody and carry it out with beautiful aptitude. Taken from their debut album due out on Boss Tuneage Records later in the year titled “Gearing Up For Getting Down” this 4 track album sampler was sent to me by Dean from the band, and boy am I glad he did.

Last years “Heads In Hands, Hearts In Half” EP was a brilliant mixture of uptempo melodic emotional rock from around my home scene area of Birmingham and the new album if this is anything to go by should set Shortcut To Newark above the pack where they rightly belong to be.

“Ten Years Later” incorporates the band’s trademark sweet dual vocals in an epic song that reminds me of Clarity era Jimmy Eat World and classic Get Up Kids with a violin intertwined throughout making it sound simply brilliant. With soaring guitars and an overall sound that sounds like the band has been around for 10 years or more and are on their fifth album not their debut this has the potential to be one of my albums of the year.

“Fall Apart” is a typical Shortcut To Newark tune that could easily storm the UK charts and blow all the rest of the manufactured crap severely out of the water. With a cracking chorus that will have you singing your heart out with them, nodding your head and tapping your foot along it really is a genuinely gorgeous song. Having taken time over the recording of the album it was well worth it as it sounds like it could be released through a major label not the prolific indie it is. Guitar solos a plenty, vocal break downs and so much more Shortcut To Newark are a highlight of my musical adventures so far. Having witnessed their first ever live performance to now listening to part of their debut album I can say that their potential has reaped rewards and they are blossoming into something I could have only dreamed of back then.

“Understand” throws in some hand clapping along with the usual emotional poppy rocking they do so well whilst managing to successfully place some synth moog noises within the song’s chorus creating an uplifting barrage of melodic noise. “Fairy Tales” draws upon the dual vocals and duelling guitars to create a poppy rock number that most bands could only wish for. I find it really hard to express just how good Shortcut To Newark are and with this new set of recordings their superstar status should be granted as it is within my own head!

When “Gearing Up For Getting Down” finally hits the shelves I hope you’ve climbed upon the Shortcut bandwagon before they break out of the underground and you can claim you knew them back in the days when they played the small venues!! I expect this band to breakout really soon, and in all honesty if they don’t it’s a travesty as I think this band has the potential to explode."
Will T'ings ever be this goodagain? Stay tuned for more.
