Activists rush to aid jailed separatist, defend property

JOEY DAUBEN

DESOTO – This area on South Westmoreland Road is known for wheel-jarring pot holes and rural homesteads, not so much a separatist movement.

That soon could change.

Ed Fyffe, a member of the separatist Republic of Texas group since 1979, was jailed two weeks ago on warrants, but his troubles didn’t include failure to pay speeding tickets.

Fyffe, who lives with friend Mark Ashcraft, made a name for himself in DeSoto politics by pulling oath-of-office records on city council members, municipal judges and police officers, who he said were acting in an illegal capacity when he found none of the Texas Constitution-required documents on file.

The two also made manikin-like bodies resembling DeSoto politicians – including the mayor – being hung by a noose from a hangman’s post in the front of Fyffe’s driveway, which includes property at 1227 S. Westmoreland Rd., incorporated property that straddles the Ellis-Dallas County lines.

“It’s all a matter of public opinion,” said Bruce Adrian, who, like Fyffe and Ashcraft, believe Texas was never legally admitted to the Union in 1875. “We need to get flyers out to people [informing them about this]. Public awareness is the key.”

Adrian and others, including Ellis County’s Republic of Texas pointman Jack Remington, are preparing to take “any steps necessary” to come to the defense of Fyffe and Ashcraft.

“The DeSoto cops referred to Fyffe’s home as a ‘compound’ and we all know the stigma fellow patriots have received with words like that,” said Remington, referring to Fyffe’s interview in DeSoto’s Focus Daily News. “It’s hard to get people interested in helping another brother out if we can’t even get them to our weekly meetings in Waxahachie.

“But this is a special situation. We have criminal cops and politicians running amok over people’s rights here. It’s time for patriots everywhere to step up and come help.”

Fyffe said in an interview two months ago the next time police come to his home, they will have to walk back to the station. He said their cars would be incinerated.
