Reporter threatened after ‘politically incorrect’ story

Complaints filed for ‘terroristic threat’

Staff Report
The Ellis County Press
FERRIS – The Ellis County Press investigative reporter Joey Dauben was threatened after a story highlighting local students’ attempts at fighting political correctness on campus was published.
In the Dec. 4 issue on the Community page (Page 6), a story consisting of quotes derived from a Midlothian-based web forum was at the center of the controversy.
A relative of one of the students quoted had told him about the story, and threats were issued afterwords.
Dauben, who posted replies on http://forums.dankus.net, stands by his work.
“I posted on this forum, which consists of a bunch of Midlothian and Waxahachie High School graduates, that I was working on a story about students fighting political correctness on their college campuses,” said Dauben, a graduate of MHS who posts on the forum. “I started getting all of these replies, and so I used them for my quotes. I copied and pasted the answers into my story. They came straight from the forum.”
Because of the story, some students who were quoted said they would be in trouble for speaking out.
Other students from the forum threatened Dauben and the newspaper with lawsuits.
“If my name would have made that article with ‘crapola’ next to it, I’d beat your [expletive] and drop a hefty lawsuit down,” stated MHS graduate and forum participant James Foshea, a student at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
The material and subject matter of the forum, Dauben said, is of an “extremely politically incorrect” nature, and because of Foshea’s threat, a complaint was filed with the Ferris Police Department. Dauben accessed the forum from his office computer to read the threats and to post the updates on this story.
Other members said the newspaper was “sh***y” and “worthless” before and after the story ran. Some said the paper wasn’t as powerful as Dauben made it out to be.
“I’ll post the Midlothian police arrests that show our former classmates all the time, and they don’t have a problem with that,” Dauben said. “I told them that they were worrying way too much [about the quotes being in the paper].
“Threatening a newspaper reporter, though, isn’t exactly the smartest thing to do.”
