I think that their relationship is going to grow during the two months John spends with Stephan recovering from the cannon accident. John does go back to London, thinking he must either testify against Percy or somehow get him out of there, but I think his heart was back at the hunting lodge with Stephan. Maybe, if we are lucky, we will see more in Haunted Soldier, perhaps flashbacks to those two months at the lodge we only got a casual mention of in BOB, but I am almost certain we will see lots more of a growing relationship with Stephan in Scottish Prisoner. It's a leap, so I shouldn't be saying it, but I think it will be something happening with or to Stephan that helps John make the decision to give up his commission and marry Isobel. After all he could have married her anytime and stayed a soldier, giving him frequent excuses to not be around, and to continue living his life much as he had. I doubt the prospect of raising Willie, even for Jamie's sake would have been enough to turn his whole life inside out and be stuck on a country farm in the middle of nowhere, if there hadn't been some horrible tragedy he was running away from.
