I thought about that quotation as one to post because it shows Lord John's sense of honor so clearly. He does not suggest to Stephan that he might be gay because it would make Stephan so self loathing that he would be closer to suicide. Certainly he does not mention it when he stays there to recuperate. It also shows that Lord John is capable of the idealized male brother bond. It's a shame that so many men, including Stephan, are too threatened to accept friendship from gay men, and it speaks for Jamie, that later, in America, he can accept John as a friend.
