Subject: He had paid for a leg-puller to perform that office but they weren't there. I think it was an act of mercy for a fellow officer as well as the motivation that it might so easily have been him on the gallows for the crime of sodomy had he been less fortunate or of a lesser social standing. John has a strong sense of justice and honor.
In reply to: pamelalass 's message, "And he goes beyond witnessing, to a strange act of near "mercy-killing" (another recurring theme in DG) - - so, why do you think he is moved to act in this "brotherly" fashion, when, it's true, unlike Jamie and Gavin, he barely knows Bates?" on 06:32:33 10/15/07 Mon
