 以好戰出名的阿修羅道，因有福報而沒有德性有的說法只是將他納入鬼神中，或說是墮落的天人，北傳佛教將他列入善道，南傳佛教則歸類入惡道中。
轉生到阿修羅道者，過去生雖無大惡行，但是輕慢心很重，非常的驕傲，不是瞧不起別人，就是忌妒別人比自己優秀。《業因差別經》詳細條列出十項業因，包括身行微惡、口行微惡、意行微惡、起憍慢、起我慢、起增上慢、起大慢、起邪慢、起慢慢與迴諸善根。
因業力的牽引，阿修羅可分為胎、卵、濕、化四生。卵生者身在鬼道，能以其威力，展現神通入空中；胎生者身在人道，投生的原因是原本在天道中，卻由於降德而遭貶墜；濕生者身在畜生道，住於水穴口，朝遊虛空，暮歸水宿；化生者身在天道，誕生談起。
