Subject: died brown hair turns ginger. HELP

I had my hair died black with red streaks nearly a year ago but i still can't get rid of the gingerness. I did not like the colour at the time so i had the red streaks toned down. Since then my hair went a horrible ginger colour and i have been re-dying it myself with different shades of brown. No matter what i do after a few days my hair still goes back to ginger. I've tried an ash brown as recommended by my hairdresser but it only lasted a week. Even though the red streaks have grown out the gingerness is all over. I really need help. Do i go a dark black shade? even though it probably won't suit me?? Please help me.
