AS "Star In A Million," ABS-CBN's talent search, draws to a close, only three of the original 10 contestants are left to compete in the grand finals this month.
They will vie for the one million-peso grand prize, a house and lot, and a recording contract.
Cebu's pride
Cebu's pride, Sheryn Mae Regis, is only 4'10", but when she sings, everybody listens. Billed as the "power belter" of the group, she has been consistently topping the competition since it started.
She has been winning amateur singing contests since age five. She was a theater actress in school, and was a member of Cebu Normal University's theater group, which performed in the US in 2001.
Competition
SANTOS. Youngest finalist.
How does she prepare herself before each competition? "I don't talk too much. I make sure that I rest, and I always take my vitamins," the 22-year-old charmer says.
Marinel Santos is the youngest finalist at 18. She never thought she'd pass the screenings because she failed to make the grade in other competitions. "I auditioned sa 'Star Quest' and 'Star for a Night,' pero hindi ako pumasa," she shares.
Her parents are also entertainers. She's a second year AB English student in Laguna, but she had to stop schooling because of the competition.
Latest teleserye
SANTOS. Wild card.
She's elated to be one of the singers (along with Erik Santos) of the theme of the ABS-CBN teleserye, "It Might Be You." "At least, ano man ang mangyari after the finals, maririnig ko pa rin ang boses ko," she laughs.
The third qualifier is 22-year-old Erik Santos, the "wild card" of the batch. He was the 10th member of the group to survive the show's "recall" edition. "Natalo ako during the preliminary round. Ako yung nag-top sa mga talunan," he laughs.
Second chance
Erik is very thankful for the second chance.
The nursing student started singing at age six and joined a barangay singing contest when he was eight years old. "Puro matatanda ang kalaban ko. I sang Sharon's 'Pangarap na Bituin,' but I lost," he recalls. Well, he could win big now!
