'STAR IN A MILLION' HOSTED BY ZSA ZSA AND EDU
MANILA, October 30, 2003 (MALAYA) by ETHEL RAMOS - WHEN I get the chance to interview singers, I always ask them what the first song they ever learned and at what age.
Not one who is gifted with a good singing voice, I love listening to music nonetheless. But, alas, I cannot remember having learned any particular song, especially when I was younger.
Thus, I took the opportunity to throw these questions to the ten finalists of "Star in a Million," ABS-CBN's quest for the ultimate star, when they were presented to select members of the press recently.
"Star in a Million" used to be but a portion of ABS-CBN's Sunday noontime variety show, "ASAP Mania," but it is now a show on its own. Zsa Zsa Padilla and Edu Manzano will host it. Anchorperson is Ryan Agoncillo.
In any case, here are the answers we got from the 10 contestants.
* Christian Bautista, 22, a balladeer from Cavite: "'Greatest Love of All.' And I was seven."
Christian said he would sing the song before his family and their reaction always inspired him to sing better the next time.
"They are now the reason why I want to emerge a winner in this contest," he revealed.
* Czarina Rosales, 16, from Tondo: "'Hero.' Mariah Carey popularized it. She happens to be my idol."
Czarina was nine when she learned that song by heart.
* Michelle San Miguel, 16, from Cainta, Rizal: "'Rain' became my signature song at seven. And the reason I joined 'Star in a Million' was because whenever I appear in 'ASAP Mania,' my Mom sees me on the TFC Channel."
Michelle's mom is working in the U.S. Her dream is for her mom to come back to the country and stay here for good.

* Teresa is 23 years old and an aspiring model. She resides in Cubao.
Like Christian, the first song she learned when she was the "Greatest Love of All" at age 8.
She was studying to be a medical technologist when she decided to quit so she could pursue a singing career. Her dream is to become a recording star.
* Johann Escaņan is 21 years old. He is from Cebu City.
He was eight when he learned to sing "Yesterday's Dream."
Should he win in "Star in a Million," he wants to dedicate his victory to his good friend John, who encouraged him to join the contest.
* Gayle Dizon, 19, comes from Mandaluyong City. She was seven or eight when she started imitating Mariah Carey sing "Hero." "Star in a Million" is the first singing contest she's joined.

* Marinel Santos, 18, comes from Laguna. Both her parents are singers. In fact, they are currently abroad performing. Her parents were the ones who taught her how to sing "One Moment In Time" where she was seven years old.
* DK Tijam is 16 years old. It's his desire to give his family a comfortable future. That's why he joined "Star in a Million." He revealed that at five years old, he loved singing "Nakapagtataka."
* Sheryn Regis, 22, is from Cebu City. She loved listening to the songs of Celeste Legaspi when she was young. However, the first song she learned at five years old was "Dito Ba?", sang by Kuh Ledesma.
* Erik Santos, 22, is from Bulacan. He was six years old when he started singing "Pangarap Kong Bituin," the theme song of the movie of Sharon Cuneta, "Bituing Walang Ningning."
The "Star in a Million" winner gets a house and P1 million in cash.
