I was just spending my Christmas holidays in the Phils when I happened to see on TV this Star in a Million contest. I am a balikbayan who lives in Munich, Germany. The first time I heard Sheryn sing (a week before the finals), I was convinced she would make it as a champion. I studied voice in Madrid, Spain back in 1988 so at least I can say that I can tell if one has a talent to sing. There could be two reasons why she lost: wrong choice of song and over-confidence. The contest was not only based on voice but on personality as well and the judges were looking for a recording star who has not just the voice but the looks as well and Erik happened to be the most qualified for the title. If the contest were based only on the voice quality, Sheryn would have won and Erik would have been sacked long ago. Her voice is brilliant and can't be at all compared to Erik's. But this contest was for the recording industry (as far as I know) and Erik was lucky enough to have the voice (good enough but not brilliant) and the good looks. Hope he stays humble. To Sheryn, I was disappointed too when you lost to Erik but I hope you learn to accept defeat so you can be humble. Humility, not the voice, is the beautiful trait that truly shines.
