Winners not really 'best'
NOW that talent search shows are the rage on local TV, viewers have been giving them enthusiastic and empathetic patronage. However, we note that the winners of some of these talent search programs aren't really that superior when compared to the better crop of starlets who make it in show biz without having gone through the search show's rigorous winnowing and star-building process.
This is a disappointment, because the search process is supposed to hone the programs' best bets to an exemplary total-performance level. Alas, some products, thus far, aren't all that outstanding and unique.
Take "Star in A Million's" first champion, Erik Santos. He sings well in the much imitated Martin Nievera mode, but doesn't really make his songs his own.

You see, the key here is not just acceptable performing ability, but the performer's unique selling proposition-and that, Shereen has in her unusual combination of small size and big voice.
If she had been small and sweet, she'd be like so many other wannabe's. If she was tall and had a big voice, ditto.
But the "contradiction" of her being a small and yet powerful singer is what catches the audience's attention, pretty much like it did decades ago, when another petite but mature-voiced singer, Nora Aunor, broke local entertainment's boringly predictable "rules
