‘Star in a Million’ Season 2
Tonight (July 17), the grand showdown of "Star in a Million: Season 2" will begin. And vying for the grand prize are eight finalists who all want to follow in the footsteps of "Star in a Million 2003" winner Erik Santos.
The eight finalists are OJ Mariano, Shanna Hife, Eman Omaga, Nyko Maca, Frenchie Dy, Michael Cruz, Ralph David and Jasmine Fitzgerald.
Eliminations will happen weekly until the top three grand finalists are left to compete for the R1million, the house and lot, and other attractive prizes. It would indeed be a tough job for the judges who believe that all of the grand finalists are already the best among the best. But of course, only one can be the next "Star in a Million!"
Now, let’s get to know the finalists:
OJ Mariano , billed the "Versatile Crooner," was the January grand finalist. He is all heart because he performs with such passion and charm. Versatility is his edge and he has the talent of making any song sound like his own original piece. If he sounds to professional, it’s because he has been trained with and has toured with the internationally known choral group Novo Concertante Manila. At almost six feet tall, OJ is a former varsity volleyball player. A Fine Arts student at UP, dabbling in graphics design, he has decided to pursue his love for music and joined the UP College of Music.
Shanna Hife, the February grand finalist, is the "Whistling Diva." No one can do what Shanna Hife does — induce a whistle tone on cue in perfect pitch in any song of any genre. No one, even the most talented and most awarded of singers in the country cannot boast of that talent. And that is why Shanna was dubbed "The Whistling Diva." Coming from humble beginnings, she started her singing training at age 13. She sang with bands and joined singing contests to earn money to help her family in sending her younger siblings to school.
Eman Omaga, "The Pop Prince," was the March grand finalist. Like his idol, Gary Valenciano, Eman performs with a purpose — for God (being a young man of great faith) and for his family. He offers every performances for his sick mother and gives his winnings for her medical treatments. What makes him truly stand out is his heart. He gives a hundred percent in everything he gets into — from singing, dancing, acting, composing, painting, drawing and making films. Among all the grand finalists, Eman boasts of exceptional musicality and amazing hip-hop moves. Fondly called "The Pop Prince," he is also a prince of faith and of passion for his music.
Nyko Maca, "The Soul Sister," is the April grand finalist. Hailing from Montreal, Canada, this 23-year-old brown beauty wants to make it big in Philippine showbiz by changing the face of local recording. Her avant garde song renditions and vocal stylings are truly a breath of fresh air. Her musical influences included Erika Badu and Alicia Keys. But make no mistake, she’s not just into singing, she also lends her hand in various charities and causes both in Canada and Brazil. Now that’s really something new. A great voice, a bubbly personality and a good heart — that’s Nyko Maca for you.
Frenchie Dy, "The Big Time Belter," is the May grand finalist. A big woman to complement her big voice, no other frame can house such a voice of such immense magnitude. Let’s welcome "Star in a Million’s" answer to Aretha Franklin. Novaliches-bred 23-year-old Frenchie will astound you with her undeniable stage presence and powerful range. She steps on the stage and immediately owns it. And her appreciative audience knows it as she belts out tunes with careful precision. Each note is perfected and every lyrics crystal clear. You can always expect a clean and awesome performance from Frenchie Dy.
Michael Cruz, "The Rock Idol," was the May grand finalist. Never in the history of "Star in a Million" has there been someone like Michael Cruz. This 23-year-old Cavite native will charm you with his gentleness and sheep-like demeanor but the moment he steps on stage, he breaks loose and turns into this full-fledged rock star. His deep and haunting voice will send shivers to your spine and reach inside you like no other singer can. Never a dull performance when Michael is around. His voice is as handsome as he is.
Ralph David, "The Texters’ Hearththrob" is the June grand finalist. If there’s one grand finalist who stands out when it comes to looks, it’s none other than Ralph David. Amassing the highest number of audience votes ever in the history of the competition, it is clear that the audience sees the "X" factor in him. Whenever he enters the studio, the audience goes into a frenzy and swoons over him. No doubt, he’s the kind of guy who sweeps every girl off her feet. He was many times offered to do modelling jobs but he’d always refuse because he’s always wanted to concentrate on his singing. A Computer Programming graduate, he’s focused his energies on pursuing his other dream — singing. He is the lead singer of a band called Sun Crave.
Jasmine Fitzgerald, "The Sweet Singing Sensation," is the wildcard grand finalist. She has come a long way to be the very last grand finalist to enter the competition. After being eliminated in the February monthly finals, she flew back to her native Australia to continue school and pursue singing in church, a famous ministry called "Hill Song." This July, she flew back to try her luck again in "Star in a Million" and finally succeeded, landing herself a place in the Grand Finals as the wild card grand finalist! Likened to a Donita Rose who can sing, this 16-year-old Filipino-Australian beauty shines onstage. Her training at the Newton School for Performing Arts (High School level) has helped her hone her craft. She captures everyone’s heart and attention whenever she smiles. She sings so simply but with feeling and angst.
