We’d like to give way to this letter emailed to us by a reader, Ana Illustre about the new ABS-CBN show “Born Diva.”

We haven’t really sat down to watch this show from beginning to end, but we’d like to share Ana’s observations with our readers. It’s up to you whether you would be able to find merits (or demerits) in what Ana has to say about it.

Here goes:

Dear Ms. Shirley Pizarro:

I just wanted to write about the show born diva. I am so disappointed about the concept of the show.

I thought it was going to be a search for a woman who has extraordinary singing prowess and has the makings of a diva. But no, the girls dont get to sing until after they are made over. So you dont really know if they have the talent.

Next the socalled make-over specialists go on to make comments about the appearance of the contestants and what needs to be changed.

This kind of extreme make-over is a little bit too much to be shown on primetime TV. The show caters to children and all those diva wannabe’s.

The producers should realize that this kind of concept could actually dampen the spirits of those who aspire to be singers. The show teaches them wrong values, making them believe that you have to first be good-looking above all else to be able to make it in showbiz. Talent just goes a poor second.

When the girls were made to sing later on, they had okay voices, but not really extraordinary. What is the purpose of the show?

Maybe Ms. Padilla should think twice before she accepts a show such as this one. True, she must be earning a lot from this, but what kind of value does it teach. Does it teach about perseverance, endurance, and doing one’s best to perfect one’s craft? Or is it all about beauty and every thing else that’s skin deep?

Probably Miss Padilla thinks that she is perfect for the show because she has lately succombed to going public about her make over activities. Let us re think our values and what we teach the youth.
Ana Illustre
