STAR BYTES by Butch Francisco
The Philippine Star 02/22/2005

I was watching Search for Star in a Million on ABS-CBN two Fridays ago when – during the break – I caught a trailer of Goin’ Bulilit, Channel 2’s new kiddie gag show and was amused by it. I took a mental note of this new program and decided to catch it on its Sunday early evening slot because I thought it was going to be another Ang TV, which produced the likes of Jolina Magdangal, Paolo Contis, Claudine Barretto and other stars who are still very active in show business today.

When I finally watched it the other Sunday, I thought it could really be a launching pad for some of our future stars – probably even superstars because most of its very young mainstays are undeniably very talented.

To my disappointment, however, whatever funny gags they had in that episode were already in the trailer that I saw days earlier. But what really bothered me was this segment about "how some Chinese names come about."

One kid said that Chinese people choose names according to the person’s fate in life. And so a blind man is called Andy Lim, a paraplegic is named Kenneth Wok and a maintenance man is Johnny Toh. Funny? It made me sick in the stomach.

If there is something I cannot allow in this world, it is for other people to make fun of the handicapped. I also treat with respect people who provide us with service – whether at home or in the workplace (except maybe for some overzealous and discourteous security guards). Parents shed blood, sweat and tears to send their children to school to give them a good education and proper education includes the teaching of proper values. There are also organizations that spend a tremendous amount of money on advertising campaigns that hopefully would impart the right values to kids. But all that effort would just go to waste if we allowed an irresponsible program like Goin’ Bulilit to continue perpetrating all those wrong values on television.

To make matters worse, the performers in the show are children and the target viewers of this program are the young – actually the very young.

This early, Goin’ Bulilit is already teaching children the wrong values or negating whatever positive values responsible parents have taught their kids.

I hope the people behind this program take note of that because that was very irresponsible of them.

On a more positive note, one of my bigger joys when I watch television today is tuning in to Search for a Star in a Million of ABS-CBN in cooperation with Viva Entertainment. I think this search is daily – although what I usually catch is the week’s culmination late Friday nights.

Honestly, I am not yet familiar with the show’s mechanics on how they eliminate by merely listening to the performers rendering their winning (or even losing) pieces. I don’t care much for the suspense element because I know in my heart that even those who get eliminated will still make it in this business – somehow.

Search for a Star in a Million is a handsomely-mounted production hosted by singing champions Sarah Geronimo, Mark Bautista, Erik Santos and Christian Bautista.

All four have already proven their worth as singers, but in this talent search, they also get to display their hosting skills. (Sarah Geronimo is tremendously good).

There is so much creativity involved in the writing of the spiels of this show to begin with. Couple that with the hosts’ energy and hosting talent and you come up with a really lively production.

However, something should still be done with the way the judges – Rowell Santiago, Agot Isidro and Wyngard Tracy – give their evaluation at the end of the performances of the contestants. I know they cannot be Simon Cowell of American Idol because the Pinoys can really be onion-skinned. But I guess they can still spice up their comments some more and merely saying that the contestant is beautiful or cute will not help at all. Beauty and cuteness should not even matter in a competition like this because this is, after all, a singing contest.

But overall, the hosting, the writing and direction of Search for a Star in a Million is truly one in a million.
