Subject: Lottery scams

I watched a UK network TV prog called Scambusters last night. It's so
full of itself as to be almost unwatchable, but it did track down one of
the Canadian lottery scammers. Apparently Vancouver is a favourite home
for such scammers as the local judiciary are not exactly on the ball.

In the featured example, a woman was telephoned at home by someone
saying she had won a substantial sum in a Canadian lottery, but needed
to send a cheque to cover taxes.

After a while she received another phone call from someone saying that
she had won, but the person who rang previously had been defrauding the
company and was being prosecuted and her cheque would be recovered, but
the time limit on collecting her win was getting close and she should
send another cheque for the taxes.

Then she received another call purporting to be from the Vancouver
police saying both the previous calls had been from scammers and she
would get her money back, but in the meantime could she send another
cheque so the police could follow it through the system to see where it
ended up.

The prog makers followed the trail to a mail drop (which was breaking
lots of laws by not asking for proof of id etc) then to a gangster who
had used the money to buy a fleet of luxury cars (including a
Lamborghini) which he rented out at exorbitant rates (Rent a Benz).
