Thousands lost in internet scam
Wednesday, 3 March 2004

Internet thieves have stolen from at least three Canowindra residents, netting thousands from a simple email scam.
One resident alone has lost funds in the vicinity of $5,000, after they innocently replied to an official looking email regarding confirmation of their bank account details.
Constable Anthony Durkin said that the fraud was being investigated across Australia, and that Canowindra was just one of many places with residents who had lost money in the past fortnight.
"The customers received an email, replying with their bank details, and found the next day that their money is gone. There have been at least three here and thousands have disappeared from their accounts."
"The emails talk about a glitch in the system and ask the customer to confirm their details."
He and his colleagues warn
residents never to send their bank account details and if they receive any such emails to contact them immediately.
