Man arrested over Internet scam in UK


LONDON: British police have made one of the first arrests in a relatively new Internet scam known as "phishing" in which crafty programmers create bogus e-mails and websites to dupe Internet customers out of their bank details.

A 21-year-old man is accused of trying to steal the banking details of customers at Internet bank Smile, authorities said.

"It is believed this man was a copy-cat phisher, and is not connected to the organised crime group that is behind the global swathe of phishing scams targeting bank users in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA," the UK's National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU) said.

The NHTCU said officials from The Co-Operative Bank, who operate www.smile.co.uk, reported the scam last month to police. Officers from the NHTCU and Lancashire Constabulary arrested the man, a resident of Lytham St Anne's in northern England.
