Internet scam under investigation

Latvian crooks use Internet virus to extract money from NZ bank accounts - police investigating

16 January 2004

Crooks in Latvia have discovered a way to steal Internet banking codes and transfer your money.

Police here are investigating the scam, which has seen $3,000 stolen from someone's account.

A $15,000 transaction through Westpac was blocked by the bank.

National E-Crime Manager, Maarten Kleintjes says the criminals are able to exploit a two-part virus which can enter your computer through such things as movie trailers downloaded from the web.

He says the second part of the virus scans a number of computers on the web which have the first part, and then makes contact.

Mr Kleintjes says your machine can then be instructed to save user names and passwords
