Suspect may be linked to Internet scam

By ROGER ADKINS

PARKERSBURG - The Wood County man arrested Wednesday in connection with the robbery of Community Bank also is being investigated in connection with an Internet fraud scam, police said Thursday.

Eugene Daniel Golden, 36, of 2171 Meadowview Drive, Briarwood, was being held on $50,000 bond after being charged with Wednesday's robbery of the Community Bank on Emerson Avenue.
Police allege Golden used a bomb threat to coerce bank tellers into complying with demands for money.

Information garnered from interviews with Golden led police to believe he may have been involved in an Internet fraud scam, said Ginny Conley, Wood County prosecuting attorney.

Though no charges have been filed, Conley confirmed reports of an ongoing investigation regarding a connection between Golden and an Ebay scam.

"It came up in police statements (Wednesday) night," Conley said.

Officials said the scam involved the sale of Sugar Bowl tickets.

Many individuals bought tickets but never received them in the mail. This activity reportedly occurred during the end of December, investigators said.

There reportedly were several victims in multiple states, officials said.

The Wood County Sheriff's Office is handling that investigation while the Parkersburg Police Department continues to investigate the bank robbery.

Sheriff's Detective Bruce Riffle said he received information from the FBI's Internet Fraud Complaint Center regarding Golden before the robbery occurred. The IFCC allows people to report Internet fraud online. The FBI then refers the complaints to local law enforcement agencies.

Riffle had only one referral from a victim in Texas, but he said there likely were several more victims.

Two reported victims, one in Louisiana and another in Texas, contacted News and Sentinel reporters Thursday after reading the Parkersburg newspaper's bank robbery story online. Both claimed they were victims of a scam, but they refused to allow their names to be published. They would not further comment on record. One reported victim said he filed a complaint with the IFCC, but the FBI declined to provide that information to the newspaper.

Golden will face a preliminary hearing on the bank robbery charge in 10 days.

During the robbery a suspect walked up to the drive-through at the bank and taped a note to the window indicating an explosive device would be detonated if bank officials refused to comply with demands for money, Parkersburg detectives said.

Bank employees complied with the note and handed over $21,066 in cash, detectives said. The suspect then fled in a green vehicle, but returned a short time later after realizing he left the note taped to the window.

Police detectives said when the suspect returned, he parked his vehicle in the lot at Emerson Lanes behind the North End Market and walked back to the bank, at 3906 Emerson, to retrieve the note.

Upon arrival at the scene, Patrolman Blaine Ritchie saw a man walk up to the drive-through window and remove a note that had been taped there, police said. Ritchie instructed the man to stop, but he disobeyed the officer's commands and ran to the rear of the bank and continued to the rear of the North End Market, officers said.

Patrolman K.L. Hornbeck chased the suspect down on foot and caught him behind North End Market, 3704 Emerson Ave. The suspect was attempting to get into a light green Daewoo Leganza and later was identified as Golden, detectives said.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the vehicle from magistrate court. During the search, detectives recovered a brown bag full of money, along with clothing matching the description of what the suspect was wearing, from the trunk of the vehicle.
