Subject: AMERICA STINKS????
In reply to: GINA 's message, "YOU CAN'T BE MISSING THIS" on 23:38:07 12/30/05 Fri

gina,

AMERICA STINKS???? There are many things wrong with american society I'll be the first to admit, but if ya want to talk about stuff that stinks, try major cities out side of the USA like mexico city, manila, lima, ho chi minh, tashkent, bombay, etc. That is because there is a lack of basic lots of basic services like garbage pickup and sewer systems.

My point in bringing this up is, even with the issues of greed, short sightness, mass consumption, etc., America has managed to solve lots of problems most parts of the world have not even addressed with public institutions.

Over the years I've managed to make it to some pretty far off the beaten tracks and noticed that American style capitalism does have its faults, but it has its good sides too! I've cited basic infrastructure that is in the states but isn't present in lots of other capital cities, but also in the states people have the ability to talk $hit about the government, ya can't do that in china, mexico, most all parts of the old soviet union, etc., etc.

The problem I see with the United States, and its a problem that had happened to all great and powerful empires, romans, greek, etc., is that citizens become too self absorbed and inward looking.

President bush jr. and has administration are prime example of idiots looking inward and rooting out all people who disagree with their preordained world view. Actually its human nature to act that way.... people choose to hang out and associate with people of similar back ground. Ever notice conservatives only hang out with conservatives, liberals hang out with liberals, mexicans move into mexican neighborhoods, blacks live in mostly black neighborhoods, whites like to live in mostly white neighborhoods, etc.

There is good and bad points with everything, and there are always going to be tradeoffs. I don't know if ya ever consider this point, but ever consider that america is the only county that does world class science is lots of differnt fields, is the only nation that has placed men on the moon and explored lots of the solar system. The capitalist system is the only system that allows people to live out their dreams, and create art, science, etc....

For all its faults, america is the best over all comprimise I've seen and althought I might not have been everwhere I hung out in lots of places, europe, asia, etc....

Its human nature that is the greatest strength of the capitalist system, it also is its greatest weakenss. If any other culture/society was as rich as the USA it too would have similar problems, just something to think about.

ben

p.s. happy new year
