Santos vs Santos in last Sunday’s PPS
By WALDEN SADIRI
It was Santos against Santos in last Sunday’s final showdown of the
contenders of GMA 7’s second "Pinoy Pop Superstar." The title was
hotly contested by Aicelle Santos and Gerald Santos. In fact, there
was another Santos, Harry, who made it to the Final Four. The fourth
was Denver Regencia.
Aicelle Santos came to the Araneta Coliseum with an undefeated
status from the regular weekly competitions leading to the "Pinoy
Pop Superstar Grand Showdown." Like a prized fighter, all odds were
in her favor. She was the strongest contender landing a slot in both
the Top 4 and Final 2 during the finals.
She also won a couple of special PP Superstar awards - the Pinoy Pop
Roadshow Superstar with a R20,000 cash prize from SM Supermalls
which was awarded by a very pregnant Jaya, and the Pinoy Pop
Superstar Best Album Performer.
Unfortunately, despite a soulful and powerful rendition of the Nonoy
Tan’s composition "Closer To Your Heart," lady luck wasn’t at
Aicelle’s side last Sunday. The diva of the second "Pinoy Pop
Superstar" was defeated by the crowd favorite - Gerald Santos!
Compared to Aicelle’s R&B and "diva-ish" style of singing, it was
the balladeer from Navotas’ consistency in his singing style that
paved the way for his victory. He simply sang his songs perfectly
note per note and knew when and where to belt the songs to woo the
audience and certainly the judges too.
En route to the Final Four status, Gerald landed a spot with
his "Kahit Isang Saglit" rendition, a popular Tagalog love song from
the country’s foremost balladeer Martin Nievera. He also won one of
the coveted Final Two slots with his suave and authoritative
interpretation of Wency Cornejo’s "Hanggang."
From the beginning, there were aready good signs for Gerald Santos.
The Araneta Coliseum’s lower and upper box seats were almost filled
up with Gerald Santos fans and supporters. From the first round, the
score of Gerald from one judge which was announced by Regine
Velasquez, the show’s host, was already very encouraging. His score
was the highest at 94%.
Lastly, he was also announced the Pinoy Pop Superstar Viewers
Favorite with 30% from the total 300,000 text votes and for this he
also received P25,000 in cash.
Gerald was the instant millionaire that Sunday morning (the show was
taped as live at 10 p.m. Saturday and finished by 1 a.m.) as he
earned a R1million cash prize. Among his other prizes are a Futura
Classic house developed by Filinvest and located in Dasmariñas,
Cavite, a brand new Chevrolet Optra, a one-year management contract
with GMA Network under the supervision of GMA Artist Center and an
exclusive recording contract with GMA Records!
Also part of his other prizes are services worth P300,000 from Dr.
Vicki Belo, a one–year free beauty services and R50,000 cash from
Ricky Reyes and P100,00 worth of clothes from Pepsi Herrera and
Edwin Tan.
The judges were arranger-composer Danny Tan, director/scriptwriter
Floy Quintos, recording artis/TV host and "Queen of Soul" Jaya, GMA
Network Senior Vice President for Entertainment TV, Wilma Galvante
and GMA Records Executive President/Chief Operations Officer Felipe
S. Yalong.
The other Pinoy Pop Superstar grand contenders were Irra Cenina,
Elise Estrada and Rosemarie Tan.
