Another first
IF YOU don't hear much from Kuh Ledesma, there's nothing to worry
about. She is not in hiding from the public eye even if she has found
a sanctuary in the pollution-free city of Tagaytay where she has a
hacienda named after her 19-year-old daughter, Isabella.
Finding the place is like looking for a pot of gold at the end of the
rainbow. It won't be easy for the first-time visitor to locate the
hacienda. But it's worth the trip.
Kuh welcomes us at the gate with Isabella and a talent she is now
managing named Rebekah.
The press gathering was to announce a dinner show on April 3 at the
hacienda. The show is called "Hacienda Isabella: Underneath the
Stars," and Kuh describes it as Valentine in April.
This is another first for Kuh, who seems to be following every
significant move her idol Barbra Streisand makes. Barbra once held a
concert in her farm.
The first sight, which would greet visitors of the hacienda is a
nangka tree laden with fruits wrapped in sacks.
"There are about 80 jackfruits in the farm, which I retained. What
were chopped off were the coffee trees. Jackfruits have a nice smell,
especially when they are ripening. We mix them in our green salads.
"They are one of the most expensive local fruits we have, and one of
my favorites. Pero sa sobrang pamumunga, we give the fruits away to
friends. We are starting to plant basil and other leafy vegetables in
the garden. I want everything fresh when we serve them," Kuh says.
The four-hectare property was discovered by Kuh's brother seven years
ago. But she almost sold it at one point.
"It remained idle for quite a long period. I thought of selling it
because it was idle. No one was taking care of it because I seldom
come here. For one reason or another, we did not push through with
the sale. Looking back, I think God has a purpose that's why the sale
didn't push through. God has a hand in everything we do," she
explains.
Kuh visits the hacienda three times a week. She never runs out of
ideas not only in beautifying it, but in making it a major tourist
attraction in Tagaytay after the Taal Volcano.
Sounding like Dick Gordon, Kuh says: "Tagaytay makes a good
substitute for Baguio because of the cool weather. Going to Baguio
has become an ordeal due to heavy traffic. A lot of time is wasted on
the road. This is a perfect get-away. Apa Ongpin's wedding took place
here, and it was one of the most beautiful and most solemn weddings
that I have ever witnessed. We had about 300 guests, and could have
accommodated more. The beauty of it is that you can see a lot of
stars, which makes the affair romantic."
