The Superstar and the Pop Diva

Kuh Ledesma and Nora Aunor embark on a US tour
By Irene Ocampo Curtis

POLITICS, intrigues and a dream concert that nobody thought would happen. These, more or less, made up Superstar Nora Aunor and Pop Diva Kuh Ledesma’s brief tête-à-tête with selected friends from the press one sweltering afternoon.

1st, the Concert La Aunor and the Diva’s hours these days are swallowed whole by one commitment after another, that it was sort of a marvel that the two even managed to meet up to set up a concert together and not just one concert, but a tour and not just a tour, but a tour of six cities in the US, no less. Whew!

Yes, the two celebrated powerhouse are all set to conquer US Fil-Am audience as they embark on a six US city tour—Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Washington DC, Chicago, Atlantic City and Atlanta—from May 22 to June 19.

“We are doing very well over there,” Kuh told The Times. The register box has started ringing and continues to do so to this minute, proving that teaming up the two of the biggest names in the recording and concert industry is indeed a wise, fab idea.

Nora lamblasts detractors

And to think that it almost never happened. Kuh had ASAP every week and Nora was busy with her latest sojourn to the big screen with official Manila Film Festival entry Naglalayag, where she co-stars with Yul Servo, and of course, her currently much talked about campaign for President Arroyo.

“Wala. Wala. Wala at talagang wala, [None. None. None and truly none,]” the woman with the expressive eyes firmly, but adamantly stressed when pressed if she indeed received millions of campaigning fee from the administration chief. The hot, hot P6.2-million worth issue dominated the chitchat and yet, the dusky superstar remained unruffled.

“I’m not a politician so why should they make us such issues about me?” asked the awarded actress. “If they can doctor the documents they are showing the public now that state I received that kind of amount, what more kung sila na ang nakaupo?”

“Nakakatakot,” she answered her own question. She told that she has no idea where the detractors got their documents but she’s determined to find out. “They’re trying to fool the people, especially the poor, using lies. If they can do this to me now [accuse her] then they can do this to anyone once they’re in Malacañang. Are we gonna choose that kind of national leader? More the reason why I should help reelect GMA to the presidency.”

Her soft-spoken tirade—if it can be called such benignly spoken as it was—may sound as if Matet’s mom is on the warpath but no, she’d rather focus her energy on helping the poorest of the poor. “I’m thinking because I came from the poor class, I can effectively communicate with the masa including the squatters; I can talk to them.”

Now, our press doesn’t know it yet, but Nora confessed that she would love to offer her services to her former kind and, if GMA retains her position, be their official voice in the government. When the P6.2-million issue butted in once again, she only has this to say: “If I were a materialistic person, I wouldn’t still be working my ass off today. Sitting pretty na lang ako.”

And to her political phantom hecklers: “God knows the truth. Karma na lang nila yan isang araw.”

However, Kuh doesn’t share her friend’s political choice. Though they don’t talk about their differing political beliefs, the suave songstress firmly advocates religious presidential aspirant Brother Eddie Villanueva. “Brother Eddie is the best candidate because he’s spiritually mature, so he is ready for temptations and he’s got his character to back him up, to help him refuse these.”

Kuh is as cool as ever, an authentic chic whether in glorious concert gowns that everyone’s used to seeing her in or in simple sexy get-ups like the white ensemble she wore to this lunch. She wisely steered the conversation away from excessive political talk and delves into the ongoing plans for the upcoming concert. “We’ll be doing a number of duets, but mostly we’ll perform in production numbers. I’ll even be doing some of her songs.”

Her talented daughter, Isabella, will be present in the concert for the first two weeks, but she’ll be staying put with the crowd, “or it wouldn’t be a Power of Two thing anymore”.

Kuh is Kuh, but Nora Aunor is Nora Aunor. Isn’t the Diva afraid that she’d be upstaged by the most famous petite in Fil pop culture? “Not at all.”

“I’ve never been insecure about stuff like that.” Kuh, with the overpowering presence, never upstages and is never upstaged. “I’ve always been magnanimous with my [concert] guests. I do my best whenever I’m given the opportunity to perform, whether my guest has a bigger name or a lesser title than mine. Sa ‘kin, inaalagaan ko silang lahat,” the regal swan said. Just ask the sultry Zsa Zsa Padilla who was the other diva during their highly successful Diva to Diva concert.

Or better yet, loaded pockets oughta catch her and Nora when they fly to the US for the Power of Two concert and be blown away by the magnitude of two starts shining as one. Scheduled performances: San Francisco’s Nob Hill Masonic Center (May 22), San Diego’s Pala Casino Resort (May 28), Washington DC’s Lisner Auditorium (May 30), Chicago’s Gateway Theater (June 5), Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall (June 11), Atlanta’s Woodruff Symphony (June 13) and the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles (June 19). This is certainly an event that no one should miss! To Nora and Kuh, bon voyage!
