A-1 performers in Canseco tribute

An impressive list of A-1 performers has joined the Canseco tribute
concert slated on Jan. 27 at the PICC no less. This is a repeat of
the highly successful "Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan," which was in
honor of the late George Canseco, composer of OPM classics
like "Ngayon at Kailanman" (popularized by Basil Valdez) and "Dito
Ba?" (popularized by Kuh Ledesma who spearheaded the concert
tribute).

Since it was a tribute to the late musical genius that Canseco was,
it was expected that a number of singers and songwriters would want
to stand up and be counted and for the first tribute, there were
several artists who wanted to join but couldn’t because of prior
commitments.

For the repeat of "Paano Kita Mapasa-salamatan" on Jan. 27, there
will be new guests: Noted singer-actor Piolo Pascual, Side A, one of
the country’s most enduring bands; Rey Valera who like Canseco was
one of the stalwarts of OPM’s golden age in the 70s, and Ms. Regine
Velasquez, Asia’s Songbird. Since this is a fundraising project, Kuh
said they will be performing for free!

The above named artists, who except for Regine who has already
recorded her own version of Casenco’s "Ikaw," are among the few in
the industry who have yet to record a Canseco song, will join the
original cast of performers led by Kuh, Basil, Christian Bautista,
Dulce, harpist Noelle Cassandra, and Asia ’s Queen of Songs, Ms.
Pilita Corrales.

Kuh, the prime mover behind this star-studded and much-anticipated
musical tribute, said she asked these artists to join the cast
precisely because they had never recorded a Canseco song, unlike the
others in the cast. Kuh recorded "Dito Ba?" "Bulaklak" and "Ako ay
Pilipino;" Basil had a career-making record with "Ngayon at
Kailanman" among many other Canseco compositions; Dulce is still
known today as the singer who popularized "Ako ang Nagwagi" and
Pilita, though she has retired from active performing, is still
associated with her signature Canseco hit, "Kapantay ay Langit."

"It would really interesting to see how Piolo, Side A and Rey, who’s
also a songwriter, would interpret Canseco songs," said Kuh. "Piolo,
because he was still very young during the peak of OPM; Side A
because I don’t think a band has ever recorded a Canseco hit; and
Rey, well, because as I said, like George, he’s also a songwriter,
and it would be interesting to see how a fellow songwriter would
interpret another composer’s song."

The other reason for the repeat is that a lot of people have been
asking for it after tickets to the first one were all sold out. Kuh
disclosed that she is also thinking of taking the show, or at least
portions of it, on a US tour since a lot of Pinoys in the US are
homesick for OPM. "What better show to bring than this one?" Kuh
asked.

"Paano Kita Mapasasalamatan" is presented by Smart Gold and Mossimo.
