Date Posted: 17:32:22 08/03/05 Wed Using a fishing line testor that measures ft lbs of torque down to .0001 ft lbs and dragging 2 models of kayaks across a 45' pool in Ada, Michigan (using a adjustable speed electric drill to keep a consistent pull on the line). With the rudder up and rudder down, we found that the MYTH of RUDDERS CREATING DRAG is soooooo BUSTED. BUSTED like nobody's business. With the rudder fully engaged and dragging at 4 MPH, it added only .023 ft lbs of torque compared to dragging a yak by with rudder up. THat is equivalent to pushing a penny across a table of ice. Then we turned the kayaks at the same rate by fully engaging the rudder with 3 tests then leaning the kayak with ballast to make a turn (3 times), and we found that the drag was more for the kayak turned by leaning it with ballast (Current Designs and Perception Captiva). Urban legend!! Those of you who claim rudders create drag can join the believers of a scuba diver being sucked up by aircraft fire fighting equipment. I'm sure our resident scientist will want to recreate the test, but so far, the MYTH IS BUSTED. >;-} Pathfinder [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
