If anyone is interested in coming along on Sept. 5 (the Sunday of Labor Day weekend), there are a few of us having a bike/paddle training day. We will be biking on the White Pine Trail from Ashton, south to Reed City, then switching over to the Pere Marquette Trail east-bound to Evart (20 miles biking). Once in Evart, we will switch to canoe/kayak and paddle the Muskegon River south to Big Rapids. I have paddled this before, and if you bust your hump, you can do it in 2.5 hours in a kayak, 4 hours in a canoe. If you take your time, it normally takes peaple about 6 hours in a canoe, not including breaks.

Afterwards, I am having a cook-out for all interested, as well as a bonfire. Bring your own camp chair!

There are several campgrounds along the Muskegon as well, if you want to camp out (Hersey, Paris, and Big Rapids all have on-river camp grounds). There is also the potential to camp out in my yard after the bonfire (I have five acres adjacent to the Nat'l Forest).

Anyone interested, feel free to give me a shout.

Cheers,

Mike LaFontaine (Torch)
