Yo,

If you are receiving this e-mail, it is because you are on the list to go on the Agawa Canyon Expedition (maybe you haven’t officially told me that your not, to avoid a “confrontation”). The Hilker’s are receiving this e-mail because they are honorary expedition members.

If you are not going, or if someone you know is missing from the below list, or if you have any other comments, please reply and let me know.

Size: Right now we have 17 expeditioners going. This number will change as new ones are added and some back out (usually, this number ends lower).

They are:

Bill “Wapiti” Smith
Chuck “Papa” Hill
Dane “Kramer” Proctor
Brian “Government” Neff
John Hysom (‘nother Colorado resident)
Nathan Neff (‘nother Colorado resident)
Steve Harrington
Vic “Kemosobi” Weeks
Brian “Paddy” Hauenstein
Russ “Counselor” Cole
Randy “Recondo” Letts
Kenneth “Liteweight” Knight
Brian “Belvedere” Buchanan
Andy Kursch
Red Squirrel
Costello
Pathfinder

Activity:

We will be exploring the Agawa Canyon area. This will be a base camp operation, so bring some comforts. The Algoma Central Railway requests that we keep our (individual) equipment down to 150 lbs. We will be camping next to the tracks, but be prepared to haul the equipment a ½ mile or so in case the campsite is flooded, rock fall, etc.

There will also be bivouac trips going to remote locations that may mean staying in the bush overnight, so if you choose an remote trip bring a lightweight shelter, sleeping arrangements, food and water (purifying) equipment. You will have a choice to participate in these trips.

Two teams will explore different areas of the area. We may have to opportunity to hike, swim, canoe, climb, rappel, traverse, etc. But the primary mission of the expedition is to gather technical and aesthetic information about the area. Including GPS data, etc.

Location:

The Agawa Canyon, which is located about 114 miles north of Sault Ste Marie, Canada. The Canyon has no service to it by road, only by train. The Algoma Central Railway is one of the last Flag Down trains in North America. The Canyon is home to a tour train park, which brings hundreds of tourist to it everyday for 2 hours. It is a Ghost Town the rest of the time. We will be camping over a mile south of the canyon.

Unit:

Expedition Leader – Chuck “Pathfinder” Hayden
Expedition Pathfinder – Dane “Kramer” Proctor
Alpha Team Leader – Bill “Wapiti” Smith
Bravo Team Leader – Chuck “Papa” Hill
Sweeper One – Brian “Government” Neff
Sweeper Two – Randy “Recondo” Letts
Each team will assign a team pathfinder and team sweeper before each assignment

Time:

Leaving Grand Rapids on Wednesday, August 11th, at 7:00pm from the Car pool lot at M-57 (14 Mile Rd – Greenville) and US-131. Or you can rendezvous with the team before 6am at the Algoma Rail Depot in Sault Ste Marie, Canada on August 12th.

The Team will Depart the Agawa Canyon on Monday 16th between 1-3pm. So you may arrive home late Monday Evening. Keep Tuesday available (flexible) as we may run into trouble and may not be able to return on time.

There is no cell service, phones or communication available to the outside world, except satellite phone (which only one is available at the tour train park, but only in emergencies (life threatening only). If your family needs to communicate with you, they may do so through the Ontario Provincial Police.

Equipment:

More coming soon.

But a couple of notes. If you have a GPS, bring it and know how to use it. We will be using them to mark locations, trails, etc. Especially, be familiar with: Marking locations, using the backtrack feature, manually enter a UTM Coordinate, and the go to feature. Also, if your GPS has a “Serial” port download cable, bring that also. You will need base camp gear and lightweight overnight and dayhike gear.

Food
Water (purification ability)
Shelter
Clothing

More coming soon.

Let me know if you have questions. I will be sending more e-mails as participants firm up, materialize.

You can see an animated map and a little information on our website. Just go to the mainpage and click on the Agawa Canyon Expedition 2004.

See ya and God Speed,

Pathfinder
