Date Posted: 21:19:30 09/07/04 Tue Sat - camped at the only state forest campground with only two RVs and no 5th wheels... I stopped counting at 30 in most of the others. Sun - Rented Kayaks in Empire. My first experience on a yak and it was great. The fiance and I paddled from Empire beach almost to the end of Sleeping Bear Point (5mi - one way). Going out, conditions were beautiful. slight breeze from the SSW, 1' waves at the most... Glass. Just before we got to the point, the wind started kicking up and we decided to head back. good going at first, but then the wind moved into our face and started to really blow. Waves got bigger too - 2' or so. Enough that they were breaking over the boat and I didn't have a skirt. At least the shop gave us pumps... Slow going back, but manageable. We closed the day with a roaring fire ont he beach in Sleeping Bear Dunes. Mon - packed up and headed home as the storm hit. Places of note: Sleeping Bear Surf and Kayak in Empire. Small store, but the owner runs it and has decent rental rates for kayaks. Deerings Market in Empire still hs the best summer sausage around. Sleeping Bear Dunes Nat'l Lakeshore - Allows you to have fires on the beach by the water. 4 miles before White Cloud - Where the traffic backup started on M37 for the stoplight. Country Roads - where the family vans and RVs fear to go heading south... Took a bunch of time off the return trip. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
