Never used a snow cave, but I have favored using a lean-to.
Quick and easy to set up, and can have a fire in front of it
to keep warm.

In snow I dig a pit to put frame for lean-to over, and build
lean-to from sticks and military rain poncho.

For me it has worked quite well.
