MTU did a big study a few years ago on abandoned mines. I'm still trying to obtain a copy of it, but basically, they went around to a bunch of abandoned mines and assessed saftey risks, recommended sealing a few of them, and assessed the possibility of commercial applications. I can't seem to locate the professor in charge of it, I think he's moved on to other things, as he isn't listed in the MTU faculty directory, nor are any of his collegues noted in the few documents that I have found. Most of the stuff is from a few years ago (1998-2000).
