Jim,
Much like you, my roots are chasing fish & fur. Now I mostly peddle & paddle. One of my goals for this summer is to catch a salmon off my kayak, let me know if you're interested in this mission.

As for backpacking, you HAVE to go to Pictured Rocks sometime this year, the fall is best in my mind. I think it's the prettiest place in Michigan.

I haven't gotten on a trip yet, but I'm certainly planning on it (I got sucked into the Hugh Heward Challenge here in Lansing this weekend).
