MEMORANDUM To: Adventurous Mariners of The Fortune Bay Expeditionary Team From: Wapiti, Expedition Leader Soo Locks Expedition Re: Preliminary Logistics Update Date: 10 May 2004 The few that have chosen and those that are deciding to join the Soo Locks Expedition 2004, TAKE NOTICE!! Recent site survey of our expedition route has allowed us to confirm points of launch and rendezvous. First, Kayak Rental (if needed) We have a source in the Upper Peninsula that will rent kayaks to expedition members. The name of the outfitter is WoodsWaterEcotours in Hessel, Michigan. The have given us a preliminary cost approximately $30-$35/day. These will come fully outfitted with safety gear and are expedition style kayaks. They can be contacted at 906-484-4157 or info@woodswaterecotours.com and talk to Jessie (she). Let them know you will be joining the Fortune Bay Expeditionary Team. You will be responsible for all rental charges, etc. If you need to rent, do so as soon as possible!! Second, Rendezvous Hessel, Michigan (southern UP). We will meet the evening of Wednesday, June 9th. You can meet at Hessel or meet the convoy at 7 pm at the car pool lot at 14-mile (M-57) and US 131. We expect to take 3.5 to 4 hours to get to Hessel. At Hessel we will camp at a National Forest Campground (no campground fee) (maybe a small user fee). Communications will be on CB Channel 1 (Local) or Cell Phone (Long Distance) e-mail wapiti@fortunebaycompany.com. Three, Transportation to Launch Leaving our cars at Detour Passage (or Hessel), we expect Woods and Water Ecotours to provide transportation for us and our kayaks to the launch site. There will be a cost of perhaps $20-$50 per member. We should have a better idea of the cost within a few days. This means, we will leave our cars in a semi secure location for 3-4 days and we WILL NOT meet in Sault Ste Marie. Four, on the river We plan to take off from the Ashmun Bay Park in Sault Ste. Marine around 10am-noon on June 10th. Go through the locks an hour or two later, then head down the St Mary's River. If you only want to do a day through the locks, you could get off at the Sugar Island Ferry Landing (but the logistics for day trippers is all up to them, contact wapiti to work out details). We will camp at the northern end of Sugar Island or on the mainland. Day two will take us to Munuscong Lake where we will set up camp on an island. Day three, we will explore islands around Lime Island and camp on or near Lime Island. Day four will take us to Detour Village, where we will take out. Five, Kayak Training The week before, we will have two practice sessions for rescue and paddle technique at the city park in Lowell, Michigan. If you are an experienced kayaker, there may be no need to attend, but we recommend all take the training course to meet the other expedition members and to brush up or learn rescue techniques. There will be two scheduled in the evening. If you can't make them, let Wapiti know. If you would like to attend contact Wapiti to sign up. He will have dates for you. Six, the Gear List Kayaking Gear: (In Orange will be with rental) Kayak Paddle (extra paddle if you have one) Spray Skirt PFD (Personal Flotation Device) Must be worn Whistle Floating Rope 25 feet Dry Bags (or use heavy plastic bags and double them) Pump for kayak Flares, hand held Sponge Gloves if your hands are not use to paddling and to keep you warm. Sunglasses Picture I.D., Medical Card and some cash (Waterproof bag or Zip-Lock) Camping Gear: Tent (can be shared, let me know if you have room for another or need a partner) Sleeping Bag rated to 20 degrees is good Sleeping Pad Stove (There should be plenty in the group to share, so if you don't have one there is no need to buy one) Mess Kit (Spoon, Fork, Bowl, Pot and Cup) Lighter and/or water proof matches Small Chair (nice thing to have if there is room) Sun tan lotion Bug Dope Toiletries including toilet paper, and environmentally friendly soaps, (Caution: some believe certain scented feminine hygiene products may attract bears) Knife Compass Camera You would want to go on a trip like this and not bring a camera (Disposable waterproof are good) Clothes: T-shirts (wicking if possible) Shorts (zip-offs are nice so you don't need long pants to) Polar Fleece jacket (can be warn on the water under rain coat or at camp) Head Net There could be some bug, but we will pray for a breeze. Hat to keep the sun or rain off you. Shoes or Boots: You need something you can get wet and will be comfortable in your kayak. We should have to portage so lighter water type shoe would work. You will want an dry pair of shoes or boots for camp. Its makes a big difference when you can put on a pair of dry socks and boots. Food: (4 Breakfasts, 4 Lunches, 3 Dinners, plus snacks) The higher demand on your energy the more you need to take in. A good balance between protein, carbs, and fat is essential for all around body maintenance. See our "Carbs vs. Protein" article on this web site for a more in-depth discussion. GORP (Good `ol raisins and peanuts) or similar fill in the gaps well while on the water. Water: Water containers (bottles or bladders) Water Filter (There should be plenty in the group to share, so if you don't have one there is no need to buy one) Drink water and lots of it. Coffee and tea's are comfort foods but tend to dehydrate the body if you drink too much. Gatorade and Power drinks are useful but not in place of water. First Aid: Fill with pain killers, tweezers, Benadryl (it relieves allergy and cold symptoms, relieves itching and scratching from bug bites to poison ivy, bee stings and helps the affected person rest), antiseptic wipes, sunscreen, sun burn treatment, band aids, tape (duct tape can be used here), blister treatments, bag balm (antibiotic good to reduce rashes), foot powder with anti-fungal qualities, insect repellent, water purification tablets, an emergency blanket (Mylar material), and super glue to bind bad cuts. Always report any allergies you have and prescription meds needed to your Expedition Leader before the trip. We have a comprehensive resource to treat various injuries on this web site under . Any gear that you would want to get wet put in dry bag or 2 heavy plastic bags. And Finally, We will publish an Expedition Plan the week be for the expedition. You can print it off and give it to your family. There is a possibility that weather will delay us a day or two, so make you employer and family ready for the possibility. The trip should be relatively easy and on pretty calm waters. Look forward to seeing you all.
