I've never heard of that guy but I do know that Pavel teaches some of the stuff in his SWAT tapes- mostly the power behind hitting and all that. Kung Fu is supposedly supposed to teach all that but the only instructor near me is a White Crane guy and he's just into forms.

I just started taking Dragon Kenpo for the exact reason you mentioned. I too think there's something else to be learned from the martial arts besides ass kicking. I mean, I basically do know how to defend myself and now I'm getting into the spiritual side of it. My instructor is also a black belt in Ninjitsu and is getting his black belt in Kung Fu so he's still learning it all himself. In Sundays class he told us all he's a little disappointed in Kung Fu. He said that the point of doing those forms (which Kung Fu is 90% forms) is to focus and visualize what you would do in real life but in real life he said he would do things totally different than what even Kenpo teaches. Apparently he was taking JuJiustu (I can't spell that) and he quit at blue belt because they were getting into that competition stuff. He said all the street applicable stuff is learned in the early belts and to get to black you just have to practice it for years ane be able to apply it but the tide is turned for the cage aspect of it. He said street grappling is extremely easy and this made me think about what CLugston's getting into- the quick street takedowns.

Not to brag but he's really f*cking impressed with my strength, he said. We were doing Akido takedowns (he took that and quit for the same reason as above) and he had a hell of a time with me. I do those Back Bridges from Matt Furey's tapes and Mike (my instructor) took me all the way to the ground but I was resisting at a point to where everyone else fell down. I was bent all the way over and still had my balance and let myself down. I also do Pavel's Kettlebell lifts and his snatches (lifting the weight from the floor to over your head in one movement) make your arms and shoulders ungodly strong- he had my wrist behind my head because he couldn't get a wrist long on me and from there couldn't move my arm any farthure back and my midsection is strong from Furey's wall walking- he just had a hell of a time. I'm like "holy shit! this stuff is working!" The funny thing is, I really didn't think I was getting anywhere.
