Subject: King Haakon VII is my absolute favourite among Norwegian monarchs since 872 !!!

Prince Christian Frederik Carl Georg Valdemar Axel of Denmark was a not promising little prince who had joined the Danish navy in 1886. But then ten years later in 1996 he married his cousin Princess Maud, the youngest daughter of the Prince and the Princess of Wales, and suddenly Prince Carl was no longer a little prince but a prince of importance. Prince Carl and his wife settled in Copenhagen, but planned to go to England where Prince Carl could join the British navy. And because Princess Maud didn't feel happy in Denmark but for holidays.

In 1905 a little far to the north the Swedes lost their power of judgement and we Norwegians lost our patience and hocus-pocus: King Oscar II was no longer King of Norway and the Norwegian-Swedish Union was history. (Don't tell anyone! It was a revolution. A revolution is an awful thing. And revolutions, all of them, are illegal)

We Norwegians would remain a kingdom and was in need of a king. But there was no king available in Europe at the time so we had to lower the list and get a prince instead. A Swedish Prince Carl would but couldn't. The above mentioned Danish Prince Carl both would and could. And Princess Maud found it exciting to go to Norway.

In November 1905 the former Prince and Princess of Denmark sailed for Christiania but now as King Haakon VII and Queen Maud of Norway. And they brought with them their little two year old son, former Prince Alexander Edward Christian Frederik now Crown Prince Olav of Norway.

Next year I'll promise you a veritable hullabaloo in Norway. We'll celebrate the 1905 centenary. All of you are welcomed. The Swedes too in case they leave at home their Karl XII boots.

Cheerio !!!

Gunnar in Oslo
