Extra warning: I'm rating this 16 and above for some very mild bad language.

Dreams in the Dark (274/?)
by Katherine Gilbert

Life was never easy; the world made certain of that--as Helmut had known for sometime. Even with the privileges, the lack of closer scrutiny, which money allowed, society was vigilant. Any deviation from its demands was always punished severely.

This had always been the truth, was pounding at him again now. It was sometime the day before Nikita's visit to her grandmother--not that he knew about that particular confrontation--that the man sat down at his desk, starting to compose for the first time. This letter--all its intricacies--would be a difficult one, but he had already put it off for much too long. It was finally time to update his ally.

This wasn't an easy task, however. He was especially wondering how to make his points clear, when clarity itself was a danger. He began simply, hoping the actor would understand:

Michael,

By the time you read this, its news will already be at least a week out of date. I apologize for the delay. I've had matters to attend to, ones which couldn't be ignored. Still, I'm sorry to have kept you so long in the dark.

My hope is that your dear wife is keeping you informed of the latest happenings here, but I fear that she may well decide to spare your feelings. The truth is that we've had the visit from the older gentleman we've been fearing. He caught her at the studio last Tuesday, when she was leaving work. I only saw the end of the interview, but it was rather explosive. He has plans for her, as I think you know, and had brought the man in question along to introduce him. Things, as could be predicted, did not go well.

Your wife, I'm proud to say, stood up to him remarkably. Had she held him at gunpoint and then fired into the seat below him, he couldn't have been more surprised. Still, I'm a little alarmed that her driver didn't simply take her away before the confrontation began; I suppose he was far too appalled to think to, before their stand-off began. I just hope he'll be able to prevent such a meeting in the future.

I'm sorry to send along such disturbing news, when you're too far away to be by her. I'm certain it must be galling. If my own wife were so endangered and I were unable to be there, I would be frantic. I apologize for sending you such news, therefore, but I'm certain that you'd be far less happy, if you only discovered it upon your return.

Other than this, things here are much as expected. Nikita is healthy, and she and your child seem to be doing quite well. Her time at the studio is taxing, but she's being well looked after. Her new companions at home seem to be doing their jobs, as well.

I realize that this news can only bring you a small amount of peace. Rest assured that I've had a word with some friends about your future. While your future posting is entirely up to them, I think I've managed to find a way to get you home for just a few days, after your training ends. It won't be much, but it will give you time for a reunion of sorts. I'm afraid that's the best I can do, at the moment.

I'll forward the details to you later--and your commanders there can probably tell you the rest. Of course, all your time here won't be your own; I've only convinced them to let you go so far, if you're used to publicize the European war effort. I'm negotiating with Premier now to see the opening of *Bundle of Sorrow* during these few days; I do apologize for the irony of its content, but--as you know--it's the only film remaining with both you and Nikita in it which has yet to be viewed. I'd prefer--as I think you would--that both you and your wife be there together for its premiere. I wouldn't want them to open it with only Nikita to attend. I know you understand.

I'm sorry that this duty will put an extra burden on your brief time with your wife, but I'm certain you comprehend my reasoning. I'll do my best to see that you have at least some time undisturbed. I think I'll have to leave it to you and Mr. Fredericks to look after the rest.

I'm afraid that I haven't told Nikita about your leave yet; I'll allow you to do that, should you choose. I'm too afraid that something will go wrong to cancel the whole thing. I don't think she could stand the disappointment of that.

I've looked over this letter and see I need to clear something up. I don't wish you to think, given that last statement, that your wife is in any real danger to her health--at least no more than expected, given her condition. In fact, if anything, she seemed especially determined and fiery after that encounter the other day. I assure you that she's capable of looking after herself until your return.

Don't take this to mean that she doesn't want you back, however; I've been warned, by our mutual friend, that you sometimes take such a path. There's never been a time when the thought of you hasn't clearly been burning in the mind of your wife. There's a positive sense of loneliness about her which would nearly be endearing were it not so utterly immutable without you here to dispel it. While she is withstanding her trials quite well, she dearly wants you back. Please do take the time, then, to return to her, once your training is over.

I suppose I have little else to add here. Oh yes, I did show your newsreel clip to your wife, which I think made her more violently in need of you than ever. Don't delay your return, once chances permit. She does need you.

All of us send our regards. Keep well.

H. Volker
