Walter accompanied Michael into the parlor and sat down next to him. “I have to hand it to you, my boy. She has definitely livened up since marrying you.”

Michael smiled at the mention of his wife. “She has a passion for life I have never seen in one individual. I was afraid she would be uncomfortable way out here, but she seems happy. She continues to surprise me every day”

Walter asks, “So, Michael. How is married life treating you?” He asked in a perverted sense of tone.

Michael slowly raised his eyes, “I know where you are going with this. I am very happy. I will not however discuss my activities with my wife.”

Walter laughed and slapped Michael on the back. “Happy? You two seem completely head over heels. Do you love her, my boy?”

Michael breathed deeply and answered. “I do. How can I not? Just look at her. The very thought of her makes my soul ache.”

Walter was stunned at how quickly Michael had fallen. He quickly had to change the subject. “Your mother will be in for a shock when she comes to visit. At the moment, she cannot stop talking about how an heir will be born within the next year. She is predicting it daily. Have you and Nikita discussed children?”

Michael laughed and said, “I knew my mother would have you bring this up. I have not discussed it with her as I am completely focused on her, not any children we may have. When the time comes, I am sure you will be the first to know.”

Walter laughed, “A lot of noble people cannot relate to enjoying their marriages. Its usually the wedding and then heirs. Most people do not have the fortunate circumstance of falling in love with their spouse as you both have.”

Michael thought to himself for a moment how wonderful it would be to see his beloved filled with his child. Their child. He vowed he would never make a child to fulfill some family lineage with Nikita. Their babies would be the product of the intense love that existed between them. He would not raise any child with Nikita the way his parents had raised him.

“There is something I must discuss with you.” Walter interrupted his thoughts.

Michael looked up at him in curiosity. “What is it?”

“Some of my sources in town say that Lord Bauer has been slowly gathering allies in his region. The people, local lords and merchants. Now whether that means anything or not, I am uncertain. People believe he may try to take the county your wife came from first and then move forward after that.”

Michael listened intently but waved his hand. “Bauer has been threatening for years and has not succeeded. Everyone knows he wants the crown. He wants the Wolfe estate as well. He will inherit the estate if Nikita does not have a son. Of course, I will certainly stand for England if any threat were realized. I would not worry about it though. Bauer will never get his hands on Nikita’s home with her parents.”

“I agree Lord Michael. I just wanted to make you aware. They say he fights dirty and I do not mean by physical means of war and arms. He strikes at the hearts of people.” Walter explained.

Michael truly appreciated Walter’s opinion on everything. He had served his family for many years and has seen a great deal in his lifetime. They heard the door creak and Michael motioned for Walter to change the subject. He would not want his wife upset by the talk of Bauer.

She entered the room and curtsied to the gentlemen. Michael smiled and she came over and kissed him lightly on the mouth. He guided her to sit down and she glanced in Walter’s way. She was wearing a pale blue gown and her hair was pulled back and decorated with little blue flowers.

She started the conversation. “Sorry for my unorthodox greeting earlier. I was so ecstatic to see you, Walter.”

Walter laughed. “Do not fret, my lady. You look beautiful now in your what society deems presentable clothes. I do not mind what you wore earlier either.” He looked at Michael who glared at him and smiled.

Michael grabbed Nikita’s hand and kissed it. “Do not mind our friend, Walter. He speaks his mind without warrant. He has a bit of a perverse sense of humor.”

Nikita laughed and said, “Well, at least someone is honest and does not act like the so many mucky-mucks of London.” She turned to Walter and said, “So now that I am presentable as you say, may I ask what news you bring?”

Walter gracefully answered her, “Well, your parents arrived back home safely after the wedding and send their love. All is well at Rosemund Hall. They do tell me that you are dearly missed by your people. Michael, all is well at your home. Michael’s parents plan to visit next month…”

Nikita’s smiled faded a bit at thought of his mother. Michael did notice the slight change in her countenance and snickered. He grabbed her hand.

“My wife is delighted by your news, Walter.” He leaned over and kissed her forehead.

Walter smiled and gazed at the two lovebirds. Michael was reassuring Nikita through his eyes. Unspoken love. It radiated from the both of them.

Walter asked, “When do you leave for London, Michael?”

Michael said, “In one week. I will only be gone a fortnight but will need you to oversee the estate with Lady Nikita.”

“My pleasure, Sir.” Walter saluted him and Michael stared at him and shook his head.

Michael and Nikita had only been married for a couple of weeks, but outward appearances would suggest they had known each other forever. Walter was pleased at how everything had turned out. He did not know how Lady Adrian would feel about it. Michael was so in love with her that he had slowly let his walls and hard exterior fade.

Michael and Nikita excused themselves from Walter. They were going riding together as they did every afternoon.

Walter watched them leave and vowed to himself that he would do anything in his power to ensure their happiness. Michael was almost a son to him and he was comforted to know Michael had found some happiness.
